DAY 4 - Tournament Update
Sheffield & District Closed Senior Tournament 2026 — Day 4 Report Beauchief Tennis Club, Wednesday 10 June 2026
Day 4 of the Sheffield & District Closed Senior Tournament produced a full evening's programme across three sessions at Beauchief, with ten matches completed despite overcast conditions. With Thursday's forecast showing persistent rain throughout the day, organisers will be relieved to have banked a productive night's play.
Handicap Events
Ali Danesh made a composed start to his Men's Singles Handicap semi-final campaign, beating Hassaan Nasir 6-3 6-4 in the opening match of the evening on Court 1. Danesh looked in control throughout and will now await the winner of the other semi-final as he bids to reach the final.
In the XD Handicap, the evening's second session threw up some competitive ties. Mark Gray and Megan Green came through a tight opening set against Jonathan Sowden and Jane Willis, eventually progressing 7-6 6-0 in what proved to be a decisive turnaround after the opener. Thomas Fillingham and Rebecca Noon were beaten in two sets by Jack Horgan and Louise Moglia, who won 7-6 6-1 to progress to the quarter-finals. The XD Handicap quarter-final between John Cundall and Beth Watson against Ed and Jo Muscroft was the standout of the late session — a gripping three-setter which Cundall and Watson edged 6-3 5-7 7-5 to advance.
Mixed Doubles
The Mixed Doubles Round of 16 produced some one-sided results alongside one closely fought tie. David Gardner and Charlotte King were in dominant form, beating Alasdair and Sarah Everest-Ford 6-2 6-1 on Court 3. Shaun Scholey and Meg Grattidge followed up their Round of 16 win over Oliver Waite and Adele Finley (6-2 6-0) with an appearance in the quarter-final later in the evening, but there they met third seeds Aidan Robson and Jane Manson, who won a competitive match 7-6 6-2 to progress. Adam Pyatt-Coppell and Karla Hernandez, fresh from their strong doubles form this week, accounted for John and Rachel Hopkins 6-4 6-2 to advance to the quarter-finals.
Men's Doubles
The pick of the evening's doubles action was the men's doubles quarter-final between Alister Jackson-Wright and Vignesh Murali and third seeds Daniel Carnie and Charlie Parfett. It proved to be a thriller — Jackson-Wright and Murali took the first set 7-5 before Carnie and Parfett levelled by taking the second 6-4, setting up a match tiebreak which the seeded pair edged 10-7 to progress to the semi-finals.
XD 40+
Both XD 40+ quarter-finals produced competitive tennis. Russell Bluff and Jennifer Lewis were in impressive form, brushing aside Gary Bridgeman and Georgina Taylor 6-4 6-2 and advancing to the semi-finals with real momentum. The second tie was even more dramatic — Christopher Moran and Vicky Johnson came from behind to beat James Powell and Vicky Hukin in a deciding match tiebreak, winning 7-6 3-6 12-10 in what was one of the matches of the night.
Looking Ahead
With Thursday's forecast showing rain throughout the day, if necessary organisers will make use of the reserve indoor courts at Graves to keep the tournament on schedule. The players report at Beauchief TC by their allotted time but be prepared to transfer to Graves if necessary.
Getting through Thursday's programme will be crucial to ensuring the draws are in shape for the weekend's semi-finals and finals.
