Sheffield & District Closed Senior Tournament 2026 — Finals Day Match ReportBeauchief Tennis Club, Saturday 13 June 2026
What a way to finish! After a week of fantastic tennis, Finals Day delivered everything you could have hoped for. W go to see some sunshine, the crowds were out in force, drama on every court, and silverware lifted across 15 events. Beauchief was buzzing from first ball to last.
Men’s Singles
The day began with unfinished business. The men's singles semi-final between top seed Conor Tordoff and third seed Alex Jinks, suspended at one set apiece on Friday night due to fading light, resumed at midday with the score 6-3 to Tordoff, Jinks took the second 7-5 to level the match and force a deciding match tiebreak, which he edged 10-6 to reach the final. A remarkable turnaround and a hugely impressive performance to back up across two days.
The Men’s singles final was the last match of the day, with Jinks stepping back out for the final against Bailey Cole [2]. Jinks put on a sensational performance, beating Cole 6-2 6-1 to lift the Men’s Singles trophy in commanding style.
Women’s Singles
Top seed Louise Holtum produced a superb performance to win the Women’s Singles title, beating second seed Stella Brian 6-4 6-0. Holtum was in irresistible form, particularly in the second set, and thoroughly deserving her win.
Men’s Doubles
The Men’s Doubles final between top seeds Alex Jinks and Conor Tordoff and second seeds Thomas Everest Wilcock and Aidan Robson was an excellent contest. Jinks and Tordoff edged a tight first set 7-5 before doing the same in the second by exactly the same score to take the title. Two tightly fought sets, with the seeds eventually proving too strong.
Women’s Doubles
Charlotte King [2] and Ellen Plaskitt produced a brilliant final to beat top seeds Jess Holtum and Louise Holtum 6-2 6-3. A really impressive performance against a Holtum pairing who had looked unstoppable through the week.
Mixed Doubles
Top seeds Conor Tordoff and Chloe Gallagher were in superb form in the Mixed Doubles final, beating second seeds Jason Oldham and Louise Holtum 6-0 6-4. The first set was particularly emphatic and the pair fully deserved their title.
MS 45+
Daniel Carnie [1] capped a sensational week in the MS 45+ with a 6-2 6-1 win over second seed John Clephan in the final. Carnie was the standout performer in this event from the first ball to the last.
MD 45+
John Clephan [2] and Shaun Scholey bounced back from their MS 45+ disappointment to win the MD 45+ final, beating top seeds Daniel Carnie and Steve Wood 6-2 6-4. A great team performance from Clephan and Scholey to deny the Carnie partnership.
XD 40+
Second seeds Alasdair and Sarah Everest-Ford produced a fine final to beat top seeds Dave Mangham and Jayne Hale 6-2 6-3. Continuing their excellent form from the semi-finals, they took the XD 40+ title in fine style.
WD 55+
Sarah Bayliss [2] and Jayne Hale were in commanding form to win the WD 55+ final, beating top seeds Linda Rapinet and Lynne Reilly 6-0 6-3. A really impressive performance to take the title in straight sets.
MD 60+
Russell Bluff and Nathan Hudgell took the MD 60+ title with a 7-6 6-2 win over Gary Bridgeman and Czes Wegrzynski. After a tight first set, Bluff and Hudgell pulled clear in the second to secure the trophy.
WS Handicap
The WS Handicap final between Emma Hall and Georgina Anderson was one of the matches of the day. Hall took the first 7-5, Anderson hit back to take the second 6-2, and Anderson then edged the deciding set 7-5 to claim the title in what was a brilliant three-setter.
WD Handicap
Megan Green and Emma Hall produced a fine performance to win the WD Handicap final, beating Annabel Biggin and Vicky Hukin 7-6 6-2. After the tight first set, they pulled away to lift the trophy. A particularly nice result for Emma Hall after her singles defeat earlier in the day.
MS Handicap
Mark McCarrick produced an excellent comeback to win the MS Handicap final, beating Ali Danesh 1-6 6-2 6-4 after losing the opening set. A great fightback to take the title.
MD Handicap
Thomas Fillingham and Peter Fitzpatrick capped an outstanding week by winning the MD Handicap final 6-4 6-2 against Ali Danesh and Mark McCarrick. They had been one of the standout pairings throughout the tournament and thoroughly deserved their title.
XD Handicap
Richard and Phoebe Lockham continued their brilliant week with a fine win in the XD Handicap final, coming through a three-set battle against John Cundall and Beth Watson 3-6 6-0 6-3. After dropping the opener they were faultless in the second and held their nerve to take the title.
Thank Yous
What a week. The organising team would like to put on record their thanks to everyone who made this year's tournament such a success.
Firstly to Fabio, our tournament referee, who was endlessly accommodating throughout a week that threw plenty of scheduling challenges his way. His calm handling of it all was a huge part of why this event ran so smoothly.
To all of the players for the standard of tennis on display and the spirit in which it was played. Every event produced great matches and the level was outstanding across the board.
To everyone who came down to support throughout the week, you made the atmosphere at Beauchief truly special, particularly on the wet Thursday when the cheers were as loud as they were on any other day.
To our fantastic sponsors who helped make the week possible.
To the surrounding clubs who gave up their courts for the week to ensure we could stick to schedule, especially Graves Tennis and Leisure centre for making it possible for us to have backup indoor courts.
To the bar volunteers and cake bakers for keeping everyone fed, watered and happy throughout the week. The catering team in particular put in a fantastic shift on the opening Sunday as well as Finals Day and we can't thank them enough.
To the grounds team for keeping the courts and the club in immaculate condition all week, especially given the weather they had to contend with.
To our Finals Day umpires, who gave up their afternoon to keep score and help make Finals Day feel like the occasion it deserved to be.
And finally to the whole team for all the “extras” that helped to make the week special, finding the sponsors, organising (and polishing) the trophies, club decoration, gazebo lending, digital scoreboard programming and all the time put in in the run up to make sure everything was organised and ready to go.
We look forward to seeing you all next year for the 2027 Sheffield & District Closed Senior Tournament!
