The Sheffield and District Senior Tournament 2026 …..what’s all the fuss about?
Sheffield & District Closed Tennis Tournament 7th - 13th June 2026:
The Sheffield & District Closed Tennis Tournament has been a cornerstone of local tennis since the Sheffield & District Lawn Tennis Association was founded in 1890. More than 130 years on, tournament week continues to bring together hundreds of players and spectators.
New categories for 2026
Following feedback received via the tournament survey sent out to clubs last year, we have introduced two exciting additions to the draw. An Over 55s Women's Doubles and an Over 60s Men's Doubles have both been introduced, giving players who may have been entering for many years a clear pathway to continue doing so.
If you've been wondering whether there's still a category for you, there almost certainly is!
Something for everyone
The tournament draws on a pool of over 1,000 players who compete regularly each week across the association's various leagues. With participants ranging from teenagers right through to 70 and beyond, as well as a visually impaired category, the event offers a genuine competitive opportunity for players who might not have access to similar competitions elsewhere in the region.
Whether you're a seasoned finalist or entering for the first time, tournament week is a chance to test yourself, connect with the wider Sheffield tennis community, and be part of something with real history behind it. With both open and handicap events, the tournament is suitable for absolutely everyone, whatever their level.
A week to look forward to
This year's tournament will be hosted by Beauchief Tennis Club, supported by a number of neighbouring clubs and with backup indoor courts at Graves available to ensure play can continue whatever the weather. A minimum of five courts will be in use at Beauchief every evening during tournament week, and with additional courts across the supporting venues, matches should run to time, making it much easier for players travelling from further afield in the district to plan their participation.
The week gets underway on the opening Sunday with Womens' Day at Beauchief and the Mens matches at Dore and Totley, where the majority of first round matches will be played. The week builds to Finals Day back at Beauchief, where the tennis will be matched by a proper occasion. BBQ, cake, cheap drinks courtesy of a dedicated team of bar volunteers, and the kind of atmosphere that makes finals day worth being at whether you're on court or enjoying some great tennis from the sidelines.
Why entering matters
Tournaments like this one don't survive without entries. The more players who sign up, the stronger the draw, the better the competition, and the more secure the future of the event. We're keen to see strong numbers across all categories.
If you've played in this tournament before, now is the time to come back. If you've never entered, 2026 is the perfect year to start.
Closing date for entries is the 31st May and players are selected on a first come first served basis so enter now to avoid disappointment!
